'Shocking!' - Manchester United fans furious with Harry Maguire after Atalanta error

A number of Manchester United supporters have vented their anger at captain Harry Maguire on social media after a costly error as Atalanta earned a huge win in the UEFA Champions League.

After seeing Cristiano Ronaldo put United back on level terms right at the very end of the first half, Atalanta, who were 2-0 up at Old Trafford before losing 3-2 almost a fortnight ago, got back in front through Duvan Zapata four minutes before the hour mark, following a VAR check.

Initially, the striker was deemed to be in an offside position by the linesman on the far side, only for VAR to intervene and overrule the decision, granting Atalanta the goal and allowing them to restore their lead.

Zapata latched onto a long ball forward, looked set to be beaten to it by Maguire, who played Zapata onside as a result, only for the United skipper to mistime his attempted challenge and give the striker time to compose himself and beat David de Gea just yards from goal.

Unsurprisingly, the England international's latest error was soon criticised by the United supporters watching at home on TV. Below, MEN Sport has taken a quick glance at what some United supporters have had to say.

As you can see from the messages in the Tweets above, there is a real sense of anger being directed at Maguire from some United fans.

Maguire's error was not the first that he has committed in recent weeks, with his performances against both Leicester City and Liverpool attracting plenty of criticism, especially the one against the latter in the 5-0 demolition at Old Trafford.

A further concern will be Raphael Varane's fitness, who was forced off injured in the first half adding to the knock Victor Lindelof picked up in training.
