Shocking footage shows thief 'armed with hammer' stealing up to €20,000 worth of phones from Mullingar, Co Westmeath shop

This is the awful moment a small shop in Co Westmeath was burgled in the early hours of Friday morning.

The footage shared by Mullingar phone shop Creative I.T shows a thief ransacking the shop floor.

The owners of the shop are offering an award of €1,000 to anyone who can identify the culprit who was wearing a long jacket with a hood.

The video shows a thief enter through a window before searching through bags near the back of the shop.

The thief used a 'hammer' to smash through the shop window and to access merchandise, an owner told the Irish Mirror.

Megan Rodway, partner of shop owner Evan Doherty, told IrishMirror.ie: "He tried to get in around 4.50am Friday morning with what we think was a hammer and smashed the glass and door glass and then got into the shop door window at 5.13am.

"He was casually just going through all the Xmas phones and taking them.

"He took between €10,000 - €20,000 worth of iPhones.

"For this to happen to anyone, especially around Christmas time, is awful."

Megan added: "We have a €1,000 reward for anyone who can tell us who it is."

A Garda spokesperson told the Irish Daily Mirror: "Gardaí are investigating an alleged burglary that occurred on Friday 6 December at a business premises on Castle Street, Mullingar, at approximately 5:00am.

"A number of items were taken from the premises. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing."
