An 18-year-old driver and his 17-year-old passenger, who were quickly located, are now helping investigating officers with their inquiries.

Neither of the men were injured in the incident, and no-one else was in the vehicle at the time it went into the water.

Witness Matthew McCullough captured the dramatic moment the Renault Clio was located beneath the surface of the River Tyne.

Footage shows the roof of the vehicle poking out of the water near a jetty.

A man who works locally first became aware of the incident when a frantic customer asked him to dial 999.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said both teenagers ended up in the water, but indicated neither would require hospital treatment.

Anyone with information is asked to call Northumbria Police on 101, quoting reference number 807 12/08/19.
