Shocking footage shows flooding chaos on Irish motorway amid Met Eireann Status Yellow rain warning

Shocking footage shows part of the M8 motorway completely flooded as severe rain lashes Ireland.

The video was captured this evening near Skeheenarinky, Co Tipperary by commuter Kay English Curtin.

In the scene described as "total bedlam", vehicles are ground to a halt before the flood water, while a garda car can be seen directing traffic.

AA Ireland confirmed that the road will be closed for the foreseeable future.

A spokesman said: "The M8 northbound is expected to remain closed until further notice between J12 Mitchelstown North and J11 Cahir South due to severe flooding on the route.

"Gardai are at the scene and are directing traffic."

It comes as Ireland is gripped by a Status Yellow warning for heavy rain and flooding.

The alert began at 10am and will remain in place until midnight tonight.

And weather experts warned Ireland is set to be lashed by more heavy showers this week.

Unsettled conditions with rainy spells every day is the current forecast with the west coast set to take the worst of the damp weather.

Tuesday will start dry but rain will have formed by the early afternoon, moving eastwards to all areas.

And Tuesday night won’t be much better with temperatures dipping as low as 5C in parts.

Met Eireann said: “The rain will clear eastwards overnight on Tuesday with scattered showers moving into the west.

“Lows of five to eight degrees with fresh southeast winds veering westerly as the rain clears and moderating.”

Wednesday will be the best of the miserable days this week with dry spells expected in many areas.

It’ll be windy across the country and the Atlantic coastal counties will again see rain but it will remain between 11-14C for the day.

A forecaster added: “Many areas will stay dry for the day with sunny spells and moderate southerly breezes.

“However, showers will affect Atlantic coastal counties, and some of these will move further inland through the day. Blustery at times here also. Highest temperatures 11 to 14 degrees.”

However, Wednesday night will see heavy showers lash the west and south, continuing into Thursday morning.

It’s set to get thundery from Thursday onwards, with just the east of Ireland getting to enjoy dry and bright weather.

The weather chiefs said: “A steering low in the nearby Atlantic will feed in bands of showers with blustery southwest winds up along the Atlantic coastline and some thundery downpours.

“The best of the dry and bright weather will occur across eastern half of Ireland. Temperatures will reach the low teens at best."
