Shocking footage as thug gang caught red-handed using angle grinder to steal bike in Dublin City

This is the shocking moment that a group of thugs can be seen stealing a bike in Dublin City by using an angle grinder to cut off the chain.

The bicycle belongs to Tipperary man, Robert Mounsey, who was sent the video just minutes after the theft took place on O'Connell Street.

He told Dublin Live: "I discovered my bicycle had been stolen and started asking around the area for information.

"I got talking to a lady who was staying in the Gresham Hotel. She had recorded the whole incident on her phone and sent over the footage just eight minutes after it had happened.

"She was a tourist from Egypt and was shocked at the crime taking place in front of her on our capital's main street."

The 33-year-old added that the bike had been locked with a gold secure D-lock chain making it almost impossible to steal.

But, with the use of an angle grinder, the trio get to work stealing Robert's bike in broad daylight.

There's one main culprit who does most of the heavy lifting while the other two thieves keep on the lookout for Gardai.

First, the trio try pulling the bike off the railings and stamping on the lock before eventually the heavy lifter takes off his bag and pulls out the angle grinder.

Not concerned with getting caught, one of the watchmen even finds the time to blow his nose as sparks begin to fly between the blade of the tool and the lock.

As a crowd begins to gather around the bike, the thieves eventually start covering their faces with their hoodies and t-shirts as the main thug desperately slices away at the chain.

When asked about the possibility of getting his bike back, which was stolen in October of last year, Robert is by no means confident.

He added: "My assumption from talking to others is that these bikes are thrown in a van and ferried out of the country, sometimes through Northern Ireland.

"I bought another bike but I only use it between work and home. It is always stored inside, I never use it for errands anymore."

Gardai are continuing to investigate this theft and added that nobody had been arrested for it.
