Shocking footage as thug firestarters ignite blaze near new Dublin playground while locals fear destruction

Firestarters have been slammed by a local councillor after a new playground nearly caught fire last night when rubbish was set alight near the expensive children's equipment.

The thugs ignited the ferocious blaze last night on the Le Fanu Road in Ballyfermot in a fire that locals feared would tear down the kids' new play area.

People Before Profit councillor Hazel De Nortúin, who covers the Ballyfermot-Drimnagh area, said that the scenes her constituents witnessed last night were sadly not unexpected.

She said: "Scenes of the new playground on Le Fanu on fire.

"There's no doubt that residents surrounding the playground will know that this was inevitable.

"I've been asking DCC to make the park more secure in the evenings while the guards have said they've increased their patrols around that area."

Despite confirmation that the blaze was a rubbish fire that took place at the front of the playground and away from the equipment, councillor De Nortúin believes more steps need to be put in place to stop something like this happening in future.

She continued: "This is so disappointing to watch knowing that it's the young children in the area that will be affected.

"There's so much more that can be said but that will all have to wait for tonight. On Monday I'll be back onto DCC again.

"Hopefully going forward and by working together, the right steps can be put in place to keep the park functioning."
