Shocking figures reveal that 30% of Ireland's homeless are in three Dublin postcodes

Shocking figures released by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive under a Freedom of Information request has found that a third of Ireland's homeless are situated in three Dublin areas.

DRHE found that Dublin 1, 7 and 8 have a total of 3,001 emergency accommodation beds, almost 30% of the national total.

From these figures, Dublin 1 which covers the north inner city has around 1,488. This is almost 4% of the area's population and one-fifth of the national average.

Dublin 8 which covers the southwest inner city has 785 while Dublin 7 in the northwest inner city has 728.

There are also three areas of Dublin that have no emergency accommodation beds, RTE reports.

These are Dublin 6W which covers Terenure and Templeogue, Dublin 16 which has Knocklyon and Ballinteer and Dublin 13 where Howth and Donaghmede are situated.

When it comes to homeless children, Dublin 1 has the highest number at 694 while Dublin 8 has the highest number of adults in hostel accommodation.

Sam McGuinness of Dublin Simon said: "We are all grateful for the tolerance and generosity of the people in Dublin 1, 7, 8 who are playing an extraordinary part supporting individuals, families and children in emergency accommodation".

He added: "Let's spread our good will and generosity and be even more inclusive and believe in people and help them get back on their feet and repair more shattered lives".
