Extent of Glasgow School of Art destruction shown in shocking Apple Maps footage

Shocking footage of Glasgow School of Art shows the extent of the devastation caused two years after it went up in flames.

We told how on June 15 at 11.20pm, a fire ripped through the Mackintosh building.

It was the second blaze to hit the iconic building after the first devastating fire four years earlier in 2014.

Flames ripped through the historic property, designed by architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

At its height 12 firefighters were involved in the operation to bring the fire under control, with around 50 still on site working days later.

There was an outpouring of shock and dismay from across the country, including Scotland's First Minister, former students and other public figures.

On February 10 drone footage was shared on social media of the remnants of the building following the fire.

Ken McColl posted the footage on Twitter and wrote: "Jeezo!

"I was browsing Glasgow in Apple Maps and see they've captured the damage at the Glasgow School of Art."

The art school was built in the late 1890s by Mackintosh, then a junior draughtsman, and is widely considered to be his masterpiece.

Experts have estimated that the cost of rebuilding the gutted building would be at least £100 million, and people from across the globe have pledged to help rebuild.

Just walls and structural beams remain in the main foyer of the building, but despite the damage, Glasgow School of Art board chairwoman Muriel Gray has insisted the building will return.

Last month we told how the building's club and bar workers are to sue for lost pay after being made redundant when the venue plunged into liquidation.

More than 30 full and part-time staff lost their jobs when administrators were appointed at the city centre Vic Bar.
