Shocking aerial photos show impact of fire which ripped across Simonside

A fire which raged for days left a dark "scar" across Northumberland's Simonside Hills.

Aerial footage, captured by a volunteer pilot for the Civil Air Patrol conducting a solo maintenance flight, shows how flames left a dark patch over the landscape.

Pilot Storm Smith, who took the photos, described the damage as "an enormous black scar across the top of the hill."

The fire broke out on Monday April 13, when crews from several Northumberland stations were brought in to battle the flames in the Joe's Wood area, which had raced through large areas of heather, and were threatening to reach dense woodland nearby.

The fire was brought under control, but days later fire crews were still tackling "hotspots" which flared up.

Overnight on Wednesday April 15 flames flared up again, which bright rings of fire visible from nearby Rothbury. Flames and smoke continued to surge up and down, kept under 24-hour watch, with firefighters returning to tackle smoke and heat in the peat surface of parts of the hill by April 21.

The Nothumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team and local gamekeepers supported the firefighters in their efforts to quell the flames.

The aerial photographs have now been provided to the Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, who are investigating the cause of the blaze.
