Shocked residents 'woken by screams' after assault on Wallsend street in the early hours

Residents on a Tyneside estate say they were woken by screams after an assault in the early hours.

Emergency services were called to O'Hanlon Crescent, in Wallsend, at around 5.30am on Sunday and a 28-year-old man was taken to hospital with injuries "consistent with a bladed article".

Police say the victim is in a stable condition and their inquiries are ongoing to establish what happened.

A cordon was put in place, covering the junction with Churcher Gardens, while their investigations continued.

One woman, who lives in the area, said she woke up after hearing a woman screaming.

She added: "I heard some noise and a woman screaming.

"I didn't know what had happened but I then saw police officers outside. It was quite a shock."

Another resident said: "This is a quiet area, we don't usually have any problems here.

"It was a bit of a shock to see a police cordon. They had the place taped off for hours.

"It's clearly been something serious. They wouldn't have officers here for so long otherwise."

Northumbria Police said the man is thought to have suffered non-life threatening injuries.

A spokesman added: "At about 5.30am today police received a report of an assault outside an address on O’Hanlon Crescent in Wallsend.

"Emergency services attended the scene and a 28-year-old man was taken to hospital with injuries consistent with a bladed article.

"He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries where he remains in a stable condition.

"Enquiries are ongoing to trace the person responsible but it is believed he is known to the victim.

"A cordon remains in place at the address and anyone with any information about the assault is encouraged to contact police on 101 quoting log 264 04/08/19.”

Paramedics also attended the scene and took the injured man to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at around 5.30am this morning to a street in Wallsend following reports of an assault.

"We dispatched a paramedic ambulance, two Hazardous Area Response Teams and a HEMS (air ambulance) car.

"We treated one man at the scene who was bleeding from a wound before taking him to the RVI."
