Shocked racquetball player injured as he smashes glass door on way to defeat in final

Shocked racquetball player Alvaro Beltran was injured when he accidentally smashed a glass door during the final of the Pan American Games - before suffering the heartbreak of defeat.

During his showdown against fellow Mexian Rodrigo Montoya, Beltran fell against the glass court door with such force that it shattered, leaving him lying on the floor with hundred of glass shards strewn around him.

Pictures show Beltran bandaged after being injured by the smash, and although he continued to play it seems he was never able to recover, losing the men's singles final 9-15, 15-6, 11-0.

Montoya then went on to take doubles gold with teammate Javier Mar.

The Pan American Games were taking place in Peru, where another Mexican, Paola Longoria, achieved her third successive women's singles title after she beating Argentina's Maria Jose Vargas in the final.

The 30-year-old eased past Jose Vargas 15-7, 15-9 at Villa Deportiva Regional del Callao to win gold, adding another to those she earned at Guadalajara 2011 and Toronto 2015.

She also won her third consecutive doubles title alongside Samantha Salas, and on Saturday will attempt to attain another third consecutive Pan American Games title, in the team event.

Longoria said: "Each win has special meaning.

"Guadalajara 2011 was my Pan American Games debut.

"The racquetball complex was full of Mexicans who supported me.

"In Toronto I was the flag bearer for the delegation.

"It was double motivation and pressure to win gold.

"Today, in Lima, was my best moment in sports and is one of the happiest days of my life."
