Shocked Stapleford neighbours describe moment 'toxic' smoke filled air after house fire

Shocked neighbours have described the moment "toxic" smoke filled the air on their street after a house fire.

The incident took place on Middle Orchard Street in Stapleford at around 9pm on Friday, March 12.

One young man ran into the burning building to rescue a dog that was still inside before being "overcome" by the heat and the smoke. He was treated at the scene and only suffered minor injuries.

Chris Jackson, who lives next door to the house, said: "I was made aware of it when I heard banging on my door and window.

"I opened the door and I couldn't see my car on the pavement in front of me - that's how thick the smoke was. It was unbelievable.

"I made my way down the street, as I have a hear condition, and out of the way - a paramedic helped me.

"The smoke was horrible, it really was - really toxic and choking. It could have been a lot worse.

"I think it was an accident - the people that live there are lovely. It's a great area - everyone here looks after each other."

Meanwhile Mark Haines, who lives on the other side of the house, told Nottinghamshire Live: "When it started I was moving my van.

"The fire was coming out of the windows at the front of the house and smoke was pouring out. The glass shattered because of it.

"Everybody was out of their house and on the street before the fire service pulled up. Three crews were here - one from Stapleford, one from Ilkeston and another from Nottingham.

"I think they did quite well to contain it so quickly. It would have been worse if the fire service weren't there so quickly."

Another neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "Everyone was out of their house and there were a lot of firefighters were here.

"The fire mostly happened in the front room, by the sounds of it. There was a lot of smoke. But it was dealt with pretty quickly."

Crews left the scene just before midnight - the cause of the fire is deemed to be accidental.

Images released by Stapleford Fire Station show the extent of the damage caused by the fire, which completely gutted one of the bedrooms in the house.

Kevin Tedds, watch commander for Northamptonshire, said: "We attended the incident which was around the corner from the station.

"When we arrived it was chaos. Lots of people on the street shouting and screaming and a rapidly developing house fire. The three attending crews from Stapleford, Ilkeston and Highfields worked really well together, using some aggressive and assertive firefighting techniques to stop it spreading past the downstairs room, including a positive pressure ventilation fan and four firefighters in breathing apparatus."

A spokesperson for Stapleford Fire Station added: "Four firefighters wearing BA using hose reel jets fought the blaze and quickly bought it under control. Others used a positive pressure ventilation fan to assist and first aid equipment on the lad [who ran into the house].

"Thankfully all injuries were minor, without a working smoke alarm they could have been worse.

"The cause of the fire has been determined as accidental.

"Three crews, an officer, paramedics and police were all quickly sent to the scene, leaving just before midnight.

"Help us, check your smoke alarm works."
