Shocked neighbours describe moment house caught fire in Nottingham street

Shocked neighbours have described the moment a house caught fire in a quiet Nottingham street.

The fire broke out just after 9am on Brindley Road in Bilborough on Thursday, April 8.

Four fire crews from Ilkeston, Stapleford, Stockhill and Mansfield attended the scene, while everyone inside the house was evacuated and handed over to the East Midlands Ambulance Service. Nottinghamshire Police were also dispatched to the street.

People living nearby have described the moment the fire broke out and emergency services rushed to help put out the blaze.

Catherine Young, who has lived in the area for 10 years, said: "I was outside having a cigarette when I heard a woman screaming.

"Then I heard the fire engines, there were lots of them all parked up along the road.

"The family were all sat down on the street afterwards - everyone was safe by the looks of it.

"There was smoke billowing out of the back window, my first worry was about everyone getting out of the house safely."

Meanwhile, Michelle Sheppard, 47, who has lived on Brindley Street for 16 years, said: "I heard sirens really loud and so I ran to the gate and saw three fire engines, and the house was clearly on fire.

"There was smoke coming down the street and you could see the house on fire through the windows. It was coming out of the roof.

"I was definitely scared, with it being so close."

Another neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It was shocking to see what was happening.

"There was quite a bit of smoke coming out of a back window. I didn't think it was that bad at first, but it sounds like the whole house went up in smoke."

The cause of the fire is now being investigated by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue.

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue said: "Crews from Ilkeston, Stapleford, Stockhill and Mansfield are in attendance at a fire on Brindley Road, Bilborough.

"All occupants are out of the property and with EMAS. Nottinghamshire Police are also in attendance. A Fire Investigation will take place shortly."
