Shocked County Durham gran comes home from work to find 30,000 BEES in her garden

A County Durham woman returned home to discover 30,000 bees had invaded her garden.

Shocked Marie James found the huge swarm buzzing around the garden outside of her Darlington home on Friday.

Footage shows the scale of the swarm, which has since been safely removed.

While some people may have considered 30,000 bees the stuff of nightmares, Marie told ChronicleLive that she actually found the experience "incredibly fascinating".

"I came home from work on Friday with my five-year-old grandson and my neighbour came out to tell me they had arrived in massive swarm earlier in the afternoon,"said Marie.

She contacted a bee wrangler on Saturday morning who spent over five hours removing the bees.

"Even he was amazed by the size of the swarm, he estimated 30,000 bees," she added.

"He took the bees to rehome and all for free.

"It was incredibly fascinating and I feel lucky to have been chosen by mother nature to help preserve her bees."

Others were less enthusiastic.

On Facebook, one friend said the prospect of tens of thousands of bees in their garden was simply "terrifying".

Another wrote: "I would move house".

However while a swarm of honeybees may be a scary sight, the reality is they are often pretty docile - usually because they are stuffed full of honey.

And typically they only usually become aggressive if provoked, in order to protect their young and food supply.
