Shock as woman, 84, hit by car at busy town junction

An elderly woman is being treated in hospital for serious leg injuries after she was struck by a car.

It happened around 8.30am this morning on the busy Church Street/Academy Street junction in Troon.

Minutes later a lollipop lady would have been on duty and pupils arriving for school at St Patrick's Primary just yards away.

Chief Inspector Brian Anderson confirmed a police investigation is ongoing and that no charges have currently been pressed against the car driver.

An ambulance took the 84-year-old victim to hospital, thankfully her injuries are not life-threatening.

It is not thought the incident was weather related.

One eyewitness said: "We saw a woman get hit by a car at around 8.30pm. It looked really bad I really hope she is okay."

Another added: "It happened when the kids were going to school. The weather was dreadful and an eldery woman looked really hurt, god bless her."

Another mother added: "We heard somebody get hit by a car and I thought it was a child at first. Then we saw the old woman and it didn't look good. Hope she is okay."

South Ayrshire has been battered by the storm today and one healthcare delivery driver shot off the main A77 (pictured above), through a fence and into a potato field. It happened between Turnberry and Girvan.
