Shock as picture emerges of car being driven through park

A councillor has voiced his frustration after pictures emerged of a car being driven along a public footpath in a park.

The vehicle, a Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, was seen driving through Bramcote Hills Park, just off Ilkeston Road, on May 15.

Councillor David Watts, who represents Bramcote for the Liberal Democrats, said the incident had been reported to him on May 25.

He said walkers had to move off the footpath as the car passed through the park, and raised concerns for those trying to exercise safely during the coronavirus lockdown.

"I cannot even work out how it even got into the park," he told Nottinghamshire Live.

"It was driving on a path between the top of the park and the cricket club, there were people on the path who had to move out of the way.

"It seems to me incredibly stupid. It was not being driven at speed but it was not crawling either, and cars should not be there.

"We want people to be able to exercise safely. We've had problems in the past with motorbikes and buggies but never a car.

"We have contacted the council's parks team."

The open space has a dedicated car park for vehicles just off Ilkeston Road, but the public footpath is gated-off to prevent unauthorised cars entering.

Bollards also prevent access in other areas of the park.

Councillor Watts said Nottinghamshire Police had not yet been contacted, but that he had raised his concerns with Broxtowe Borough Council which operates the park.

A spokeswoman for Broxtowe Borough Council added: "The council was not aware of an incident regarding a car driving in the park.

"We have had no previous reports of public vehicles in the park but will be investigating fully."
