Shock as needles are dumped at popular Hamilton walking spot

Needles and drug paraphernalia were found dumped in a popular walking spot in Hamilton where children pass daily.

The area on Laighstonehall Road is often used by families and dog walkers, who fear the mess will endanger them.

Community hero Sean Boyd was alerted to a number of used syringes found near the Cadzow Burn on Sunday.

The burn runs through the area beside popular walking routes.

Sean has become a point of contact for cleaning up hazardous equipment left from drug use in Hamilton in recent months.

The shocking discovery which was seen from one resident’s window left Sean pleading to locals to be extra-cautious when walking in the area.

Sean said: “These were picked up next to the burn where kids hang about and people walk their dogs, so please be extra careful when walking about.

“We have picked up these ones and I will get them into the clinic as they are now in a sharps tub waiting to be disposed of properly.

“If you do come across anything like this, please report it ASAP, if you find nothing has been done about it, get in touch and I’ll get it removed. Let’s do our best to keep Hamilton safe everyone.”

Sean was made aware of the drug paraphernalia by a local resident who could see it all from her window.

His community’s safety has been a top priority during the course of the pandemic as he happily makes himself available to clean up his area when such incidents arise.

Sean told the Advertiser: “To be honest, I wish they would dispose of this stuff properly themselves as leaving this about brings a lot of risk to anyone who goes through the area.

“I wouldn’t judge anyone who uses this stuff, I really don’t like drugs but I can’t talk for everyone but wish they’d take other people’s safety into consideration before just discarding their stuff like this.

“And as far as I’m aware, kids and adults hang around this area.”

Sean cleans up drug mess safely and takes his own precautions when disposing the needles and ensures he doesn’t put anybody else at risk. He does the deed himself with a litter picker fastened tight to pick up needles before having them collected by South Lanarkshire Council in a sharps box.

Sean’s efforts follow on from Helping Hands, an initiative led by Sean to support vulnerable locals during the coronavirus pandemic.
