Shock as 'covidiots' gather at Edinburgh beach despite soaring coronavirus cases in Lothian

Portobello locals have been left shocked by 'selfish' revellers this afternoon as a huge group of youngsters were pictured gathering on the beach.

Images sent to Edinburgh Live show a group of up to 20 young people huddled together on Portobello beach despite soaring coronavirus cases and hospital admissions in the Lothian health board area.

Throughout the pandemic and lockdown there has been ongoing issues with young people continuing to gather in the coastal town, causing 'despair' for locals who watch these groups flock to their streets.

Current guidance from the Scottish Government states that individuals can meet up with up to 6 people (from two households) in a public space.

Earlier today Nicola Sturgeon announced at her daily coronavirus briefing that 161 new cases of coronavirus had been registered in the NHS Lothian health board, with a total of 1176 having been announced for the area in the last 7 days.

719 of these cases in the past week have been in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Live has commented Police Scotland for comment.
