Shock as Byker taco favourite Chucho's announces closure of Shields Road venue

For three years, it has brought a little taste of Mexico to Shields Road.

But it is time to say adios to Chucho's - well, for the time being at least.

The taco takeaway has announced the sudden closure of its Byker branch.

Fans took the news badly.

On Facebook, one joked they had almost had "a heart attack".

However, the firm confirmed it is simply taking a siesta from Shields Road - with the promise of a new venture in the very near future.

Emma Wass, who runs the venue with husband Jesus Tavizon Sosa, confirmed the closure was down to the landlord not extending the lease.

It came as a bit of a bombshell to the couple.

"We have had a really tough few months and have only recently reopened as a takeaway, but this is out of our hands," said Emma.

"The landlord has served his notice, so it is out of our hands.

"It is is bad timing, but we are seeing it as a positive and as a new opportunity and a chance for the fresh start."

For the time being, the details are being kept top secret. However, Emma said the couple are "excited" about the venture, which won't be far from the current unit.

But while the Jesmond branch will remain open, those in Newcastle's East End wanting some tasty tacos from the Tripadvisor-favourite only have until Sunday to grab some - before the unit closes for good.

"It is a shame for Shields Road, as it is our first place and we love it," added Emma.

"But we are hopefully staying very local."
