Shock and anger in East Lothian as alpaca injured in horror attack by out-of-control dog

John Muir Alpacas in East Lothian are appealing for information after one of the animals was brutally savaged by a dog.

The alpaca trekking company near Dunbar has a herd of the animals, and one was badly bitten yesterday (11 March).

Bloodied snaps shared by the alpaca's owner showed brutal injuries to the animal , who is said to have been "minding its own business."

It has not yet been confirmed who the owner of the dog who carried out the savage attack is, but John Muir Alpacas are pleading for information, saying the alpaca could have been killed.

In a post on the Dunbar Online Facebook group, John Muir Alpacas appealed for anyone with information on the dog owner to come forward saying:

“If anyone knows who the owner of the dog is who went through the fence and attacked the herd at John Muir Alpacas today can you please ask them to get in touch.

"This poor animal was minding its business grazing when this happened. We have pregnant females in the herd who can miscarry due to the stress of a dog attack not to mention wee baby alpacas (Cria).

"Poor animal could have been killed and is still bleeding + extremely shaken. We love dogs and have them ourselves but please if you're walking on farmland follow the countryside access code and keep them on a lead."

Over 70 people from East Lothian commented on the post, many of whom were deeply shocked at the attack.

One woman said: "Oh my goodness this is awful hope the poor wee thing recovers soon."

A man added: "That is awful news about your animal I hope the owner has the decency to come forward and offers to pay for the vets bill I'm so sorry to hear about that."

Another local said: "Hope she's ok. People should be more responsible! Would be more thought of if they owned up rather than take their dog & leave the Alpaca in distress!"
