Shkodran Mustafi transfer latest: Agent 'in talks' with Galatasaray, and his request to Arsenal

Arsenal are on the search for defensive reinforcements during the January transfer window, with players such as Dayot Upamecano and Merih Demiral linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

The need for strength at centre-back has been further compounded by a long-term injury to Calum Chambers.

However, that hasn't stopped speculation around the future of Shkodran Mustafi, who appears to be heading closer to the exit door.

The German international was heavily linked with a summer move to Roma, but he stayed at Arsenal, making just three Premier League appearances so far this season.

Mikel Arteta looks ahead to match with Sheffield United after Palace draw

So will the 27-year-old still be at the club by the end of the month? Take a look at the latest news around the defender's future.

Mustafi's demand to Arsenal

According to The Mirror , the defender, who has recently changed agents, has asked to hold talks with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta over his future at the club.

The German international is said to be unhappy with the game time he has been given this season, and is likely to push for a move away from the Emirates Stadium in order to search for more.

The report comes after an injury to Calum Chambers, but Mustafi may still look to move on from Arsenal during the window.

Agent 'in talks' with Galatasaray

According to Turkish outlet Fotomac , Mustafi's agent is set to fly out to Turkey in order to enter talks with Turkish side Galatasary about a possible January move.

The club are looking to push through a deal for the 27-year-old after being dealt with a big injury blow with Christian Luyindama having ruptured his cruciate ligament back in November.

It is possible that the deal could see Mustafi leave the Emirates Stadium on loan, although a permanent deal is not ruled out.

Wright calls for Mustafi exit

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has called for Mikel Arteta to cut his losses on Mustafi and sell the defender.

The German international stepped in to replace Calum Chambers in the team for the 2-1 loss against Chelsea back in December, and Wright gave his thoughts on his performance.

"Mustafi was absolutely petrified of him [Abraham]," Wright said on Match of the Day 2.

"You have got someone like Arteta coming in but there’s nothing you can do to coach a defender of his experience now, those are the type of players he’s got to be looking to get rid of."

What has Mustafi said?

The centre-back was close to the exit door during the summer window, but gave his reasons for not completing a move back in September.

"My father, who is my agent, spoke to the club," he told Sport BILD. "I am an Arsenal player and [I have] still got two years' contract.

"I've never been someone who begins a war when something doesn't work out.  I always said: 'If it is possible, I am open to take the next step. If not, I keep playing my football.

"The manager said he sees me the same way he sees every player in the team. That's why I played today and that's it.

"We [are] going to see what the future holds."
