Shkodran Mustafi explains why Arsenal did not want return to Premier League action vs Newcastle

Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi has explained the importance of the Premier League's two-week winter break this season, joking that the time wasn't long enough.

The Gunners took advantage of the Premier League's inaugural winter break by heading to the Middle East for a warm weather training camp, which provided Mikel Arteta with the opportunity to work with the squad on key aspects.

As Mustafi explained, this was important for Arsenal due to the managerial change that occurred in December, with Arteta having limited time to work with the squad following Unai Emery's departure.

"It was too short! It was good, it's always good when you have a little bit of time, especially for us because we had a new coach in Mikel," he told Sky Sports.

Arsenal already planning summer transfers

"We had a little bit of time to do longer training sessions, to work on a few things because during the season, when you have the games, you don't have enough time to do these training sessions because you go game after game.

"So we had time to work on that and now we have to put it on the pitch."

Arsenal will be looking to build a run of form heading into the final months of the season, with the return of Europa League football this week.
