Shirley Ballas says Strictly stars are banned from clapping

Shirley Ballas has explained why all Strictly Come Dancing contestants are banned from clapping.

The Wirral dancer revealed that when Rose Ayling-Ellis performs, no one is allowed to applaud.

This is so Rose, who is deaf, can "feel the vibrations" of the music on the dancefloor.

Rose and her professional partner Giovanni Pernice have repeatedly topped the leaderboard and last weekend they scored the perfect 40 out of 40.

Shirley explained how the EastEnders actress' other senses are "really heightened", helping her perform.

Speaking on ITV's Good Morning Britain, she said: "Nobody's allowed to clap whilst she's dancing so she can feel the vibrations of the floor. So the music's just a hair louder. She's got that beautiful feeling of vibrations, so her other senses are really really heightened."

Shirley also praised dancer Giovanni for doing an "immaculate job" of training Rose, reports the Mirror.

Shirley said: "I think Giovanni, first of all, has done an absolutely immaculate job. We have a translator just off to our left that's helping her understand what's going on and the criticisms and the critiques."

When Rose and Giovanni were confirmed to have made it through the next round of the show on a Sunday night, she confessed their leaderboard topping score hadn't sunk in yet.

She said: "No, it hasn't sunk in yet, but I think later it will sink in... I got the earliest 40 in history?"

Giovanni told her: "Yes you did! You did," with them both celebrating again.

Claudia then turned to Giovanni and added: "You got emotional Giovanni on Saturday night. You were happy to get the 40, but also it is because of your friendship and what Rose gives you."

Giovanni said: "I will make sure with all my power that you're gonna have the best time of your life because you truly deserve every single second of happiness, you really do deserve every single second."
