Shiremoor Primary School in North Tyneside closes due to positive cases of Covid

A school in North Tyneside was closed to all pupils on Friday due to a number of cases of coronavirus.

The cases were confirmed at Shiremoor Primary School and bosses took the decision to shut for the day as a precautionary measure to help prevent further spread of the virus.

It has not been revealed exactly how many positive cases there have been at the school, which was due to break up for half-term on Friday.

However, bosses have been working with public health officials to deal with the situation.

A spokesperson for North Tyneside Council said: "The school has taken the decision to close today following a number of positive cases among children in different year groups.

"This is a precautionary measure so all pupils can be PCR tested to prevent any further spread. The school has liaised with Public Health and all necessary actions are being taken."

North Tyneside is currently battling against the spread of the Indian variant of the virus.

At least 40 cases of the variant have been reported across the borough and surge testing has been taking place throughout the week.

Extra vaccination services have also been provided, through mobile and walk-in sites, to help prevent further spread.
