
Rows of greenhouse-grown watermelons await shipping in Mashiki, Kumamoto Prefecture, which was devastated in the Kumamoto Earthquake in 2016. The watermelons, harvested on Wednesday morning, are guaranteed to be sweet because of their high average sugar content. The melons are seen at the Japan Agricultural Cooperative's local grading facility, where they are sorted by characteristics such as weight and sugar content, then assigned a grade by a machine. Shipping of watermelons produced in Mashiki is at its peak, with about 300,000 of the fruits mainly ticketed for delivery in the Kanto region by mid-June.
