Shipment of 700 marine animals from Kenya intercepted in Argentina

  • Argentine authorities intercepted an illicit shipment of over 700 marine animals, including various fish and invertebrates, at Ezeiza International Airport near Buenos Aires on 26 April.
  • The animals, trafficked from Kenya, were destined for the lucrative ornamental pet trade and had endured 120 hours in transit.
  • Many of the creatures arrived dead, while the survivors exhibited severe signs of stress and shock, prompting an immediate emergency rescue operation.
  • Veterinarians and specialists from Fundación Temaikèn worked for over 28 hours to stabilise the surviving animals, adapting facilities and installing specialised tanks.
  • Conservationists have hailed the seizure as a significant blow against exotic wildlife trafficking, noting the expanding global trade and describing it as an “industrialised crime”.
