Ship on fire in Mersey sparks emergency mayday call

Fire crews attended a dramatic call on the River Mersey this morning after a ship fire.

At about 6.29am a vessel sent a mayday call out and fire crews arrived minutes later at 6.32am.

Photos from the scene show the enormous effort as three fire engines attended and a rescue boat.

A spokeswoman for Mersey Fire confirmed there was a fire in the engine room of an 18 meter long vessel, which had to be towed.

The spokeswoman said: "Firefighters were called to the River Mersey on Wednesday 17 th June following a mayday from a vessel.

"Crews were called at 6.29am and on scene at 6.32am. Three fire engines attended as well as our rescue boat, Marine Fire One.

"On arrival crews found a fire in the engine room of the 18 metre long vessel.

"The vessel had been towed to the cruise liner terminal.

"Firefighters used a main branch and hose reel to tackle the fire externally.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus then entered the vessel and used a hose reel jet and CO2 extinguisher.

"Fire crews left the scene at 8.26am."
