Ship crew member tested for COVID-19 in WA

A crew member of a bulk carrier docked south of Perth has been tested for COVID-19 (AAP)

A crew member of a bulk carrier docked south of Perth has been tested for COVID-19 after showing symptoms of the virus.

The crew member was set to be transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital overnight after being removed from the bulk carrier BM Matsuyama docked at the Kwinana grain terminal.

Western Australia's health department is expected to receive the test results on Tuesday.

"This is not a confirmed case of COVID," a WA Health spokeswoman said.

"However, members of the public should be reassured that as a precaution, this person will be transported, assessed and treated using COVID precautions."

There are 19 crew aboard the vessel, all of whom boarded in Manila on August 20.

The ship's last port was Singapore on November 25.

Premier Mark McGowan confirmed the terminal had been placed into lockdown.

He said it was unclear whether the ship would be able to depart on Tuesday as scheduled.

"It's really a matter of whether the virus has spread amongst the crew members so that they are unwell and unable to sail," he told Perth radio 6PR.

The crew is wearing personal protective equipment.

WA is meanwhile welcoming back travellers from NSW and Victoria without the need to quarantine for the first time in almost nine months.

Under changes that came into effect overnight, the states have been reclassified as "very low risk", removing the requirement to self-isolate for 14 days.

It leaves South Australia as the only state still subject to travel restrictions.

SA travellers will no longer require exemptions to enter WA as of Friday, although they will still need to enter self-quarantine.
