Eruptions continued Wednesday at Shinmoedake in the Kirishima mountain range straddling Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the smoke rose about 3,000 meters above the crater at around 6:15 a.m. on the day.
The agency issued a warning of volcanic rocks and pyroclastic flows for areas within three kilometers of the crater.
The agency said a monitoring camera confirmed large volcanic rocks more than 50 centimeters in diameter were spewed out of the crater during an eruption that occurred at 12 a.m. Tuesday morning.
