Shine Your Light coronavirus solidarity campaign sees Ireland lit up for victims of Covid-19

A host of Irish celebrities banded together to lead tributes to those who have sadly passed away from coronavirus as the country was lit up as a mark of solidarity tonight.

The Shine Your Light campaign launched by RTE saw people across the country light up their homes with torches, candles and Christmas lights in a moment of solidarity for those who lost their lives amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

Local authorities, sporting bodies, government and industry heads also lit up buildings at 9pm in an effort to shine a light in what is a very dark time for the world.

And President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina were among those who shone their light from the Áras.

Meanwhile RTE broadcast a short live special across their platforms which featured music performances and spoken word from artists including Sinead O’Connor, Paula Meehan and Colm Mac Con Iomaire.

Sinead O’Connor said of the intiative. “I’m really honoured to be taking part in this very moving event and am so inspired by the love we are all showing for each other by staying home.

“It’s not easy. Especially for teenagers. But it’s really working. So let’s keep it going. I’m shining my light with love for all the kids and teenagers who are currently in care and haven’t been able to visit their families.”

RTE has also announced that Shine Your Light will continue beyond this weekend with a wider arts initiative which will see it commission cultural works continuing right up to the Summer Solstice on June 21.
