Shine Belfast turns 25: Take a look at these classic nightlife photos through the years

Belfast performs well at many things - but one that it absolutely excels at is nightlife.

Just ask the thousands of people each year who flock to AVA Festival, Belfast's premier dance music festival which has become one of the leading festivals in Europe.

Just ask electronic duo BICEP, an internationally celebrated act, who hail from Belfast.

And, for 25 years now, Belfast has had a consistent home for local and international dance music, in the form of Shine - a dance promoter and events organiser in the city.

Starting back in 1995, Shine Belfast has grown to become the go-to name for dance music in the city, putting on legendary events throughout the year and bringing the world's biggest DJs, producers and performers to much-loved venues like Mandela Hall and The Telegraph Building.

Shine's events are so loved that even BBC Radio 1 presenter Annie Mac, who lived in Belfast as a student in the late '90s/early '00s, admitted that their Mandela Hall events "changed the course" of her life.

Now, as they celebrate a quarter of a century, we dove through Shine's archives to take a look at how things have changed throughout the years.

Shine's founder, Alan Simms, told us: "Shine started in 1995 and was more of a hobby at first, with resident DJs playing every week on a Friday night at Queens SU.

"Once we started booking guest DJs, they all really loved the reaction of the Belfast crowd and pretty soon we had big name DJs requesting to play for us and from there things just got bigger every year.

"A few years ago we decided to stop the weekly nights and place Shine events in other venues. Things really started to get interesting when we had the Telegraph building, which is one of the most exciting spaces we’ve ever seen for techno events.

"From there we decided to take things outdoors, to Custom House Square and Belsonic at Ormeau Park and that scale proved an enormous success.

"The centre of the year’s events has always been the birthday at Halloween and we’re already planning a huge year of events next year to make up for lost time in 2020."
