Shimane Gov. Tatsuya Maruyama said he is opposed to holding the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics this year.
Speaking at a press conference at the prefectural office on Wednesday, Maruyama criticized the Tokyo metropolitan government for simplifying an active epidemiological survey to study coronavirus infection routes.
Maruyama said Tokyo is "unqualified to hold the Olympic Games."
The Tokyo metropolitan government has been conducting epidemiological surveys focusing on hospitals and nursing homes. Maruyama expressed concern that such measures may result in insufficient investigation of infection routes.
"The spread of infections in major cities has dealt a heavy blow to restaurant and lodging businesses in the prefecture," Maruyama said. "We can't afford to do the same thing by allowing Tokyo to hold the Olympics and spread infections.
