Shillong Lajong continue dream run in I-League

KOLKATA: Shillong Lajong continued their impressive run in their comeback season into I-League as they defeated Churchill Brothers 2-0 in a home fixture at SSA Ground in Shillong on Wednesday.

Laiwang Bohham and Renan Paulino De Souza scored one apiece on either side of the breather as Lajong coasted to their fourth win of the league in eight games. The victory also helped the hosts to come back to winning ways after drawing their last game at Rajasthan United 1-1.

With the win, Lajong moved up to the third spot on the 13-team table, below Sreenidi Deccan on goal difference, while Churchill Brothers remained rooted to the bottom half of the roster, just above the relegation zone.

The hosts started the first half on an attacking note, mainly creating chances through the right flank to trouble the visitors' defence. However, Lajong had to wait till the fag end of the first half to score the opening goal of the match in the 45th minute when Bohham met a miscued kick five yards from the goal before kicking it in to give the home fans a reason to cheer.

Keeping up the pressure intact after the change of sides, the home side doubled the lead six minutes into the second half as player-of-the-match De Souza scored the second goal of the match. This was Lajong's fourth win at home in I-League this season and interestingly their first clean sheet of the season, too.
