Shields Road: 'Where else can you get a pint, your nails done and get chinned at 7am?'

It has happened again.

Shields Road has been voted the worst in Britain for the second time.

It is fair to say though, ChronicleLive readers think that is utter nonsense.

"Byker isn’t too bad," wrote Luke Jones. "I can think of others much worse.

"At least they have plenty of independent business unlike most high streets."

And he's right.

Dotted between the multiple branches of Greggs are butchers and grocers selling fresh food.

How a homesick Mexican chef created Chucho's, the hit cafe now bringing authentic tacos to Jesmond

Taco chain Chuchos, which has just opened another store in Jesmond, carved its reputation at its branch here, as did vegan fast food joint Junk It Up.

And for drinkers, it has cheap pints, colourful characters and crucially - as Richard Semmence pointed out - "it has got a Wetherspoon."

But the result seemed to annoy readers who thought it wasn't even the worst high street on Tyneside - never mind Britain.

Shields Road - We take a stroll down the years

Wallsend, Stanley and Gateshead were all suggested as more deserving winners - although the most popular candidate appeared to be the West Road.

Compared to these, claimed Kristina Peachie, Byker was "pure scenic".

But while many jumped to Byker's defence, some accepted it wasn't without flaw.

'Even the parents can't control them': The teenage tearaways making life near the Metro miserable

Too many empty shops and a bit grotty in places were some of the comments left on our Facebook page.

Micky Smith said over the years he'd seen some "right clips" on walking down it.

And Alan Simpson posted: "I was a bit miffed to see two drunks sitting smoking on the settee l intend to buy on payday."

Shields Road retained the dubious accolade, coming bottom of a list of 1,000 British high streets in the 2019 Retail Vitality Rankings, published by retail consultancy Harper Dennis Hobbs.

Even Newcastle City Council admits "there is room for improvement" around there.

"We have already started the process of engaging with traders and key stakeholders to work together collaboratively and identify measures that could give the area a collective boost.”

But not everyone is down about it. Far from it in fact.

"Man I love this place," wrote Anj Luzanvcia-Hird.

"Where else can you get a pint, your nails done and get chinned at 7am?"
