DETROIT _ Night Hawk and El Felino tag-teamed Juego G, and it was pretty much a knockout blow.
Sounds like wrestlers straight out of a Lucha Libre match, not simply the jersey nicknames for a pair of Tigers hitters and one unfortunate White Sox pitcher.
Translated: James Shields (Juego G) gave up back-to-back home runs to Mikie Mahtook (Night Hawk) and Ronny Rodriguez (El Felino) in a three solo-homer sixth inning as the Sox fell, 7-2, to the Tigers at Comerica Park.
White Sox interim manager Joe McEwing acknowledged before the game that Shields has been a hard-luck case. Including Thursday, the veteran right-hander has lasted at least six innings in his last five appearances.
"James has been phenomenal. His record (5-15) doesn't show but he's been outstanding throughout the year. ... He's keeping us in ballgames and giving us longer stretches where we don't have to go to the bullpen right away, eating up innings and giving us an opportunity to win."
In the fourth, Nicholas Castellanos took Shields yard for the second time this season. In fact, it was Castellanos' fifth homer against the Sox, more than any other team.
There were a couple of bright spots for two young Sox players. Designated hitter Jose Rondon hit a two-run blast in the eighth. Ryan Burr, called up Wednesday from Triple-A Charlotte, made his big-league debut and fanned Mahtook in the seventh for his first major-league strikeout.
