Shields Ferry to remain suspended until further notice while continued repairs are carried out

The Shields Ferry is to remain suspended until further notice while repairs are being carried out at its north landing.

Nexus, the public body which operates the cross-Tyne service, halted the service last week as a safety precaution due to the added impact of bad weather conditions.

Due to the ongoing weather conditions, Nexus has announced that the service will remain suspended until further notice.

A half hourly replacement bus service via the Tyne Tunnel is being provided to passengers while the ferry service is suspended.

Last week Huw Lewis, customer services director at Nexus, said: "We need to keep the ferry closed for a week while we carry out repairs to the north landing.

"This is a safety precaution until these repair works are completed. The bad weather conditions on the River Tyne are also a factor in the temporary closure.

"I'm sorry for the inconvenience this may cause. Passenger numbers remain extremely low due to the ongoing lockdown.

"We are providing a frequent replacement bus service via Tyne Tunnel so that passengers can make their journeys with as little disruption as possible until we can reopen the ferry."

The replacement service departs on the hour and 30 minutes past the hour, Monday to Saturday from 6.30am until 6.30pm and Sundays 10.30am until 6pm.

The buses operate between South Shields ferry landing and North Shields landing via the Tyne Tunnel. From South Shields, the buses depart from the bus stop on Ferry Street, outside the BT building.

From North Shields, the buses depart from the bus stop on North Quay at the end of the ferry landing.

Passengers are advised to keep an eye on the Nexus website here and the ferry’s Facebook page here.
