Shields Ferry set to resume service on Saturday following six-week closure for repairs

The Shields Ferry will resume service on Saturday following a six-week closure for essential repairs.

Structural damage on the North Shields ferry landing meant the service has been closed since November.

Nexus, which owns and manages the Shields Ferry, will begin Tyne crossings from 6.45am on Saturday.

Huw Lewis, customer services director at Nexus , said: “I’m pleased to say that the repairs on our landing are done and we can resume services on Saturday.

“My thanks go to our passengers for their patience during this extended period of disruption.

“It was vial that we closed the ferry in the interests of safety while the repairs were carried out on the North Shields landing.

“The structural damage was extensive. We had to carry out a full structural survey and procure a specialist contractor before the works could get underway.

“The engineers have now given us the green light to get back to normal operations on this popular and much loved local service.”

The announcement from Nexus comes as Metro drivers carry out a two-day strike over a bitter row with Nexus over pay.
