Shettleston fire update: woman hospitalised as road remains closed

A woman was hospitalised following a major fire in Shettleston last night.

Emergency services, including around 30 firefighters, raced to the scene on Shettleston Road shortly before 5pm after a blaze broke out in a tenement block.

Video footage showed the fire taking hold of the upper floor flats, with the blaze believed to have started in a tanning salon on the ground floor.

It's understood 15 flats were evacuated, while police have this morning confirmed a woman was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, but has since been released.

A significant section of Shettleston Road remains closed this morning as police launch an investigation into the fire.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told Glasgow Live: "Police were called around 4.55pm on Friday, 6 November, 2020 following the report of a fire at a property on Shettleston Road, Glasgow.

"Shettleston Road at Chester Street and Versalius Street remain closed.

"One woman was taken to the GRI for smoke inhalation.  She has since been released.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire."

UPDATE: Glasgow City Council have confirmed Shettleston Road is now open to road users in both directions.
