Sherlock's Una Stubbs remembered as 'Baker Street's loveliest light' as stars pay tribute

Una Stubbs clearly made a big difference to a lot of people's lives.

Those she worked alongside, the fans who admired her and the younger generation of actors she inspired have come together to pay tribute following her death at the age of 84.

It was announced today that the Sherlock and Worzel Gummidge star had died, with her agent saying she had been ill for a few months.

Her sons Joe and Christian Henson and Jason Gilmore said in a statement: "Mum passed away quietly today with her family around her, in Edinburgh.

"We ask for privacy and understanding at this most difficult and sad of times."

People rushed to Twitter to pay tribute after hearing the upsetting news.

Actress Joanna Lumley posted: "Devastated to hear about the passing of the brilliant Una Stubbs. My thoughts go out to her family & friends at this very sad time."

While actor Gyles Brandreth wrote: "Oh, this is so sad. Such a funny, lovely, gifted lady - a marvellous actress with a special style & a great (and impish) sense of humour.

"I first met her when she was in Cowardy Custard in 1972 & last saw her at Nicky Henson's funeral last year. A sad day."

Sir Cliff Richard recorded a heartfelt tribute video to "the gorgeous, beautiful, wonderful" Una and said her "talent and joy" will remain with us always.

Adding his condolences by writing "RIP Una Stubbs", he said in a video posted to his Facebook page: "I just hate having to do these kind of videos. But the gorgeous, beautiful, wonderful Una Stubbs has passed away and my memories go back immediately to the time that we first met - way back in TV times.

"And also, of course, she performed in the movies I made and I just loved her death. She was the most exciting person to be with. She was funny, she could really do just about anything - act, dance, she could even sing.

"Anyway, she has left us, and all I want to say is that I personally will miss her greatly. And I know that our industry on the whole will also miss her greatly.

"Her talent, her joy, everything that she was will remain with us, though - while we remember her, she will still be with us."

EastEnders star Bonnie Langford also remembered Una, writing: "Such a loss. She made everything look so effortless. A consummate professional, kind, gracious, elegant, versatile and fun. Her Aunt Sally was a masterclass alone. Condolences and love to those loved ones left behind"

And Sherlock showrunner Steven Moffat penned: "The loveliest light on Baker Street has gone out. What a woman, what a talent, what a star - and just about the kindest, nicest, funniest person you could meet. I don’t know how anyone even starts summing up that career - Till Death Us Do Part, Fawlty Towers, the incomparable Aunt Sally in Worzel Gummidge … and, of course, the irreplaceable heart and soul of Sherlock."

Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss tweeted: "It was one of the great joys of my life to work so closely with and to adore Una Stubbs. She was a wonderful wonderful woman and a great and serenely graceful actor. Mischief was in her blood. We were so blessed that she became our imperishable Mrs Hudson. Goodbye darling."

Broadcaster Kay Burley shared: "RIP the wonderful Una Stubbs. I remember her best working with Dick Emery and also Cliff Richard in Summer Holiday. She was 84."

The official Twitter account for channel Gold wrote in tribute: "We're all deeply saddened to learn that the magnificent Una Stubbs has passed away at the age of 84. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time."

Una's legion of loyal fans also shared their devastation.

One tweeted: "RIP to such a beautiful talented lady. The Sherlock Community will always think of you."

Another shared: "I was (only just) 18 when I worked as an extra on Sherlock. It was my first ever job and walking onto the set for the first time was so nervewracking. Una Stubbs was lovely. She had a smile and a kind word for everybody, cast, crew and extras alike. Thinking of her family."
