Sheriff Tiraspol coach aims dig at former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt after Real Madrid win

Sheriff Tiraspol made headlines on Tuesday night after they beat Real Madrid in the Champions League, and their coach has taken a swipe at a Liverpool cult hero.

The La Liga giants faced the Moldova champions at the Santiago Bernabeu in their second group game, and suffered a shock defeat.

Djasur Yakhshibaev gave Sheriff the lead in the first half, before Karim Benzema equalised from the penalty spot.

There was to be more drama when Sebastien Thill restored Sheriff’s lead in second half stoppage time to secure a famous victory.

Sheriff needed to go through qualifying to reach the Champions League group stages, seeing off Dinamo Zagreb to book their place in the tournament.

After Sheriff qualified, former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt told Dutch news outlet RTL 7 that the club “had no place” in the Champions League.

'I know the Champions League is a tournament for champions but teams like Sheriff Tiraspol have nothing to do in the Champions League.''

After Sheriff beat Madrid, the club’s manager, Yuriy Vernydub, poked fun at Kuyt’s comments.

“We are a real team … it’s our place and we proved it,” Vernydub is quoted telling The Guardian .

“It was a great player, Dirk Kuyt, who said there is no place in the Champions League for Sheriff.

“So I’m very happy to destroy his perfect world.”
