Sheriff's investigators probe double killing in South L.A.

April 23--Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide detectives Thursday were continuing their investigation into a double killing in South Los Angeles.

Sheriff's deputies went to the 1200 block of West 87th Street about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday after someone called 911 to report gunshots, officials said. When deputies arrived, they found a 26-year-old man and a 38-year-old man shot to death.

Homicide investigators were at the scene early Thursday gathering evidence, but no arrests had been made. Investigators said witnesses reported that the men were standing in front of a home when a man drove up, got out of his car and began arguing with the two victims. Witnesses said the man then shot them both and fled in a dark-colored sedan, investigators said.

The deaths are the third and fourth that Sheriff's Department investigators have taken on this week.

On Monday, homicide detectives began assisting Baldwin Park police with the killing of a 37-year-old man in front of his home in the city. Two people were seen running from the area.

On Wednesday, homicide detectives were dispatched to Compton, where a person man was found shot to death in the 1100 block of East Marcelle Street. No further information was available.

According to The Times' Homicide Report, 25 people have been killed in the last year within a mile of Wednesday night's double-shooting. The last victim was 30-year-old Wesley Morejon, who was stabbed to death in Westmont Feb. 10.
