Sheriff's deputy killed and five others injured in Colorado Springs shooting

One sheriff’s deputy was killed and five other people were injured during a shooting in Colorado Springs.

Gunfire rang out after officers encountered an adult male suspect while investigating a reported motor vehicle theft, authorities said. A civilian, a police officer and three sheriff’s deputies were all injured by gunfire and transported to the hospital with treatment, with the police officer in stable condition.

El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder said 34-year-old deputy Micah Flick died, leaving behind a wife and seven-year-old twins. He died on the 11th anniversary of his time with the department, Mr Elder said.

The suspected shooter was killed on the scene and there were no other suspects at large, authorities said.

The shooting marked the latest spasm of violence against Colorado law enforcement in recent weeks.

Late last year, a deputy died and others were injured after an assailant opened fire on officers responding to a call. A few weeks later, another sheriff’s deputy was shot down by a fleeing suspect.

A law enforcement agency responsible for the area where one of the prior shooting’s occurred responded to the latest incident with words of sympathy.

“Another loss to our law enforcement family during an active scene response,” the Colorado State Patrol’s Castle Rock branch said on Twitter. “We are here to assist our brothers/sisters in BLUE”.
