Sheriff hits out at man who drove towards an oncoming police car

A CRAZED driver who drove at an oncoming police car was, according to a sheriff, fortunate not to have been facing a “dangerous driving” charge.

Jordan Bowman, 23, drove carelessly on Caldeen Road, Burleigh Street and Calder Street in Coatbridge on January 28 last year.

Prosecutor Rosalind Walsh told Airdrie Sheriff Court last week: “He came to the attention of the police at 11.30am when he was driving a car not displaying a registration plate.

“He drove off and mounted a kerb. Police activated their blue lights.

“He went around a roundabout the wrong way, weaving in and out of traffic.”

The court heard how Bowman, of Glasgow, drove at excessive speed on the wrong side of the road and drove at an oncoming police car as he went around a roundabout in the wrong direction.

He forced officers to drive and take evasive action; Bowman admitted being disqualified from driving at the time.

Defence lawyer Tom Wise said: “He accepts his culpability and has no one else to blame but himself.”

Sheriff Petra Collins told Bowman: “You are fortunate that the Crown accepted a plea to careless rather than dangerous driving.”

Bowman was fined £300 and banned from driving for two years.

The sheriff added: “This was at the upper level of careless driving. If you breach this order you can expect custody.”

Bowman was ordered to be tagged for three months and remain at home each day from 8pm until 6am.
