Sheriff Daniels calls for impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas amidst border crisis

Immigration crisis worsens under Secretary Mayorkas' leadership.

In a recent hearing, House Republicans continued their push to impeach Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Mayorkas over his handling of the immigration crisis. The hearing comes as Mayorkas visited Eagle Pass, Texas, where over 12,000 migrants illegally entered the small town of 30,000 in the last week of 2023 alone.

During the hearing, Cochise County, Arizona Sheriff Mark Daniels expressed his concerns about the current immigration situation. Sheriff Daniels highlighted two key aspects when evaluating a leader's performance—whether their leadership is effective and if people are supportive of their decisions. In the case of Secretary Mayorkas, Sheriff Daniels claimed that Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents have expressed dissatisfaction with Mayorkas's leadership. Additionally, Sheriff Daniels pointed out that many sheriffs across the country have passed a vote of no confidence in Mayorkas due to his lack of action and ineffective policies.

Sheriff Daniels emphasized that Secretary Mayorkas, like himself, took an oath to protect communities and the country. However, he argued that Mayorkas has failed in fulfilling this duty. The sheriff asserted that Mayorkas's decisions and policies have not been successful in protecting the homeland, leading to negative consequences such as increased human trafficking, cartel activities, and a rise in crime along the border.

Addressing the question of whether Mayorkas's actions were aligned with the administration's political goals, Sheriff Daniels acknowledged that there may be a political aspect to the issue. However, he stressed that Mayorkas had a responsibility to prioritize the well-being and safety of the American people over political values and ideology. Thus, according to Sheriff Daniels, Mayorkas failed to live up to his oath and put the country at risk.

Regarding the impeachment process, it was not explicitly mentioned during the hearing how it would directly address the issues at hand. However, the call for impeachment suggests a desire to hold Mayorkas accountable for his alleged failures and potentially replace him with someone who will actively work towards resolving the immigration crisis.

Reflecting on the changing situation in Cochise County and along the border, Sheriff Daniels painted a bleak picture. He mentioned that in the past two years alone, his county had booked 2,884 individuals involved in border-related crimes, at a significant cost of $9.3 million borne by taxpayers. The sheriff depicted a situation where public safety, national security, and humanitarian concerns are consistently compromised.

The hearing shed light on the dissatisfaction and concerns surrounding Secretary Mayorkas's actions and policies regarding immigration. It remains to be seen how these discussions will shape the political landscape and potential future actions to address the ongoing crisis.
