Sheridan Smith says she was shocked when she saw herself in Sky's Hansel and Gretel

Sheridan Smith says she was stunned when she first saw herself as the wicked witch in Sky's upcoming Hansel & Gretel: After Ever After.

The actress stars in the adorable Christmas production alongside Little Britain star David Walliams, who co-wrote the show.

Known for her roles in Gavin and Stacey and musical theatre, Sheridan looks unrecognisable in the revamped fairytale donning a prosthetic nose, latex wrinkles and terrible teeth.

The actress spoke to The Mirror about her three-hour transformation at a special screening of the show, which she attended with her boyfriend Alex Lawler.

She explained: "When they first did it [the make up] I fell asleep in the chair - it was 3am.

"I nodded off and then when I first saw it it was mad - such a transformation.

"I remember sending all my mates pictures and they said 'I can't even see you in this'.

"Watching it now I can kind of see my eyes, but they changed everything. It was so clever."

Sheridan said she relished the role and wants to play more "baddies" in the future.

She revealed: "I love all that stuff and when you've got something to hide behind you can really go extreme.

"It was great fun and I never get to do those kinds of things. I like looking uglier and uglier," she joked.

Sheridan said the make-up team were "geniuses" explaining that: "They put this latex stuff on your face and squeeze your face so it brings out all your wrinkles.

"It takes ages, but I just loved it."

Despite the show being geared towards kids, Sheridan, who has a 17-month-old son with her ex fiancé Jamie Horn says she didn't let Billy see her as the witch as he would have been "too scared".

Sheridan's co-star David joked her role in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps would have been "much more appropriate".

The pair appeared together in Jack and The Beanstalk: After Ever After last year on Sky TV and David quipped that Sheridan's transformation this time was more about "taking make up off".

David plays a troll in the production complete with nasal hair, a squiffy eye and chocolate-brown dentures.

Speaking about his transformation he said: "When you're dressed up like that you feel free. You're not you anymore and you see someone else - it's an amazing feeling."
