Shepherd's Bush fire: One in hospital as 12th floor flat goes up in flames near Grenfell

One person has been rushed to hospital after 60 firefighters battled a blaze at a high-rise block of flats in London.

Eight fire engines rushed to the scene in Shepherd's Bush, less than a mile away from Grenfell Tower, after an apartment block went up in flames.

Two other people were treated at the scene with smoke seen billowing from the building.

London Fire Brigade said a flat on the 12th floor of the residential block was alight.

One eyewitness said she heard sirens from West London and felt "physically sick" after seeing how close the fire is to Grenfell Tower, with photos showing smoke from a building with Grenfell sitting in the foreground.

Another social media user said they drove past the fire near Westfield shopping centre.

Firefighters were first called to the scene at 9.23am this morning with the cause of the fire currently being investigated.

The fire service says it received more than 30 999 calls to the blaze.

The block of flats is near to Westfield at White City, as well as Shepherd's Bush Underground Station and a mile away from Grenfell Tower.

On June 14, 2017 - five years ago last week - a fire broke out at the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block in North Kensington, killing 72 people.

Felicity Buchan, MP for Kensington, tweeted: "Very concerning to hear about the high rise fire at Queensdale Crescent in Shepherds Bush.

"I am told by @LondonFire that 8 fire engines are there, 60 firefighters and a 32mm aerial appliance. A 64mm one has been called."

The fire had been brought under control by 10.55am, with six residents led to safety via internal stairs.

Meanwhile, three people from the flat that was on fire had left before fire crews arrived, and a number of other residents had also evacuated the apartment block.

One person was rushed to hospital for further treatment, with a London Ambulance Service spokesperson adding: "We were called at 9.45am to reports of a fire at a block of flats on Queensdale Crescent.

"We sent resources to the scene, including two ambulances and our Hazardous Area Response Team.

"Two patients were assessed at the scene and another was treated and taken to hospital."

Station Commander David Bracewell, who is at the scene, added: "Firefighters dealt with a fire on the 12th floor of a tower block in W11. Three people from the affected flat left before the Brigade arrived. A number of other residents evacuated the building.

"Firefighters led six residents to safety via an internal staircase. Further residents who were not affected by fire, heat or smoke were advised to remain in their flats."

He added: "In the early stages we used new technology called 9Eye that enabled a caller to send live stream videos of the incident straight into the Brigade’s 999 call centre.

"We've also used a 32m turntable ladder to put water on the outside of the building."
