Shelley Kerr slaughters VAR as she vows to go all out attack on Argentina

Shelley Kerr is ready
to throw everything at Argentina as Scotland fight to stay in the World Cup.

The women’s boss went to war on VAR after her side lost 2-1 to Japan in their second Group D clash.

But Kerr insists she will never compromise on her attacking approach. A pair of defensive blunders by skipper Rachel Corsie in the first half cost the Scots dear against the world’s seventh ranked side.

They rallied again in Rennes, just as they did against England in Nice, but a stunning late strike from Lana Clelland was not enough.

Now the Scots must beat the South Americans in the Parc des Princes on Wednesday to have any hope of making the last 16.

Scotland again failed to get going until they were two goals down but asked if she’d change anything, Kerr said: “Probably only taking a point or winning the game.

“There won’t be many teams ranked 20th in the world who run sides ranked seventh and third so close.

“Tactically, I’m not a coach to sit in and park the bus because we’ll never improve that way.

“We have improved massively in the last 18 months because we have a philosophy. It’s hugely important as a national team to play with a style and a system and we have done that.

“We won’t be a Scottish team that sits behind the ball all the time. We are past that, we have better players now. We’re positive. If you go in with a negative attitude you will never be successful. We will be ready to go again when we play Argentina.

“We conceded two bad goals, mistakes, but take them out of the game and it was much closer.

“We tried to set up in a way to stop them but in spells we didn’t do that, which is understandable against world class players.

“But for most of second half we were terrific and finished strongly again.”

Kerr was smarting VAR’s bunker officials didn’t order a review by ref Lidya Abede after Risa Shimizu handled under pressure from Erin Cuthbert.

She said: “I’m not looking for a hard luck story but I’ve watched it back three times and it was a penalty. It might have changed the game.

“It’s a penalty but there’s no point dwelling on it. We need to put all of our focus on Argentina.

“It’s great we’ve scored two goals as it might play a part in us getting out the group but we still have to beat a good Argentina team.

“I wont need to lift the players psychologically. They know they have run two of the very best teams in the world close.”

Clelland came off the bench late on for the hard working Jane Ross to score and it could prove decisive as the four best placed third teams from the six groups qualify.

She said: “I’m delighted with my first appearance and first goal at a World Cup but ultimately it’s disappointing. We just need to take three points and see what happens.”
