Shelbourne's title-winning boss Noel King named Manager of the Year

Shelbourne's title-winning manager Noel King was named Manager of the Year at the Women's National League awards on Wednesday night.

The former Ireland senior manager was honoured for guiding the Reds to their first title in five years in remarkable circumstances as they pipped Peamount United on the final day.

Shels went into the final two games of the season four points behind the defending champions but an unlikely set of results saw them seal the title at Tolka Park.

A 3-2 win over Wexford Youths in Drumcondra was enough to get the job done as Peas fell to a shock 5-2 defeat at home to Galway.

While the Reds would lose out to Youths in the FAI Cup final in Tallaght a week later, that couldn't take the shine of what was a monumental achievement for the club.

"[The season] was very entertaining, I must say, very dramatic. Extraordinary, in actual fact," King said on receipt of the award.

"It was nothing like I expected it to be, but it was great, I must say. It was exciting. We played some great football and the teams got better around us as the season went on.

"Each game was very difficult in its own way. To win it in such dramatic circumstances was just a new experience completely. It's great at this age to get new experiences!"

While the 65-year-old was grateful to be honoured with the award, he was quick to point out that the on-field achievement belonged to the players.

He gave particular praise to captain Pearl Slattery, who he dubbed the 'player-manager,' and those who have worked behind the scenes to make everything happen.

"It ranks as a great achievement for the girls. You see these managers' awards but really and truly it's just a substitute for recognising the whole team and the squad.

"These things don't happen by a manager. They happen by trying to do the best things at the right time, supporting the players, the club supporting each other.

"Pearl Slattery was an ever-present for us this year and was our own player of the year, in-house, so that tells you what you need to know.

"She still turns it in week-in, week-out, and I would consider her to be the player-manager in actual fact. She's the go-to girl and a lot of the players look up to her."
