Shelbourne Hotel to remove revolving doors due to rise in compensation claims

The Shelbourne Hotel is to remove its iconic revolving doors due to a rise in compensation claims made by patrons who have injured themselves at the entrance.

Dublin City Council's architectural conservation officer had initially refused the five star hotel's request to remove the doors due to their contribution to the character of the famous building.

But the council have overturned that decision on health and safety grounds.

The Stephen's Green venue is facing six legal actions from patrons who have been injured by the doors, reports the Sunday Times.

There have been a further 23 incidents related to the doors in recent years.

The current doors only date from the 1980s but they replaced a similar set that had been in place since the early 20th century.

A number of conditions have been placed on the removal of the doors.

They must be removed without causing damage and be stored in a secure off-site location due to their architectural significance.

The Shelbourne is also required to hire a conservation expert to oversee the removal and ensure the hotel retains the "maximum amount of surviving historic fabric" around the doors.
