Shelbourne boss Ian Morris 'raised eyebrows' at signings made by clubs who laid off players

Shelbourne boss Ian Morris is miffed at how some clubs who laid off players during the pandemic are now making ‘big name transfers’.

And he wants the FAI to ‘monitor’ whether all clubs have adhered to quarantine guidelines after landing players from outside Ireland.

Morris did not name any players or clubs but Junior’s arrival at Sligo Rovers caused a stir while St Pat’s have signed three players in the past week, albeit one on loan.

Shels pick up at home to Waterford today where Morris goes up against his old Chesterfield boss John Sheridan, who is now Blues gaffer.

But Morris said he ‘raised his eyebrows’ at some of the signings made by clubs in recent weeks.

“There are some fantastic signings coming into clubs who have previously let their staff and players go, which is interesting,” he said.

“If you haven’t been in the country and you’re coming in, you have to isolate. So it’s a tricky one for the clubs.”

Sheridan is still looking to bolster the Waterford squad. Yesterday’s 5pm transfer deadline for was in-contract players so free agents can still be snapped up.

The Blues were last night linked with midfielder Robbie Weir who played for Sheridan at Chesterfield while Kurtis Byrne and Jack Connolly are also in the mix. Ex-Ireland striker Daryl Murphy (inset) remains in line for a return to his hometown club but is nursing a calf injury.

“Hopefully it will get over the line – he wants to come and we want to sign him,” said Sheridan.
